The fifteen-year-old daughter of a friend once addressed the old Jung as follows: “Herr Professor, you are so clever. Could you please tell me the shortest path to my life’s goal?” Without a moment’s hesitation Jung replied, “The detour!” ~ Breathing on Your Own

the roo game

in response to monday’s ponderings (Somewhere, there is something incredible waiting to be known), my friend lora lea (a.k.a. roo) sent the following:

This reminds me of a game I like to play. Sometimes I say out loud "Something good is coming my way" or "Something good is coming my way today" And it makes it seem like Christmas, the conscious watching and something good arrives. Little surprises in the day. An unplanned visit or phone call, a baby duck hatches, the first ripe peach, or when it isn't snowing and I need to drive my Mom in to Colville for Physical Therapy, like this morning.
This just reminded me of that something incredible waiting to be known.
i love this way of looking at life – it focuses our minds and hearts on the good things in life, when sometimes it is all too easy to do otherwise. the good things are always there, it’s just that we don’t always see them. lora lea’s game opens our eyes to the somethings incredible out there.

would you like to play the roo game today? something good is coming my way today. how about you? ;)

on heroes

This morning I woke to find a letter to the editor that my boyfriend Stu had written last night. The local paper had referred to a certain politician as a hero, but Stu disagreed. And Stu ought to know. He is – and always has been – a hero to me. He lives true to himself; he stands up and speaks out for what is right, sometimes at great cost to himself.

I am extraordinarily blessed with heroes in my life, people who live true to themselves; people who choose to live honest, to live real, no easy task in today’s world. People who, amidst the darkness and the fear, the injustice and the pain, stand true shining their light, whatever it may be. These people show us all that no matter what shape this planet is in, no matter what a mess we humans have made, there is still hope, there are still dreams, there is still joy, there is always love.

Who are these heroes? Every single one of you. Every single person who gives a smile, shares a laugh, who listens, who loves. Every single person who lives true.

“...the hope of the world lies not with churchmen, statesmen or politicians, but with the men and women...who have banished pretense from their lives.
One by one they go forth, affecting by their presence the way we think and act. They are the light of the world. Like a city set on a hill, they can not be hid.” ~ Richard Bode, Beachcombing at Miramar

Go forth today, dear heroes. Shine your light, whatever it may be. You matter. You make a difference, just by being you.

You are the hope of the world. Live true.

1/10/07 - happy 20th birthday erin!!

Don't ask yourself what the world needs; ask yourself what makes you come alive. And then go and do that. Because what the world needs is people who have come alive. ~ Harold Whitman

for erin and for all the young people venturing forth into the world, and for all of us who are not so young, but venturing forth nonetheless....i can't imagine better advice than this. for as each of us comes alive we help the next person come alive, simply because we show them that it is possible. as erin's mom anne shows her (and me!) every day...do what makes you come alive! ;)

(thanks to lora lea for the quotation ;)

When the terrible September 11 terrorist attack took place, most of the world knew in a matter of minutes. But some people heard about it much later. A tribe in South Kenya, in an area remote from Western technology, learned about the attack only seven or eight months later. I do not know how these people, who are not in the least acquainted with our world, imagine it to be, and what they understood about the catastrophe. But they realized a tragedy had occurred. Dressed in their multicolored garments, they held a solemn meeting and decided they would send their most precious possession— sixteen cows—to the people of New York to help them in this difficult moment. These people, who had known the torment of hunger, were now ready to give up their food to show their solidarity to other human beings they had never met. ~ Piero Ferrucci, The Power of Kindness
